Fall 2012 Courses
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
-Maya Angelou

The central mission of the Black Studies Program is to prepare students to (teach and conduct research about) critically understand the experiences of people of African descent in the United States, Africa, and the Diaspora. The Program's interdisciplinary design encourages specialization within MU's broad liberal arts curriculum. Students and faculty in the Black Studies Program collectively seek to appreciate the experiences and contributions of the African Diaspora as such appreciation is vital to grasping humanity's past, present, and future.
